Anti Anxiety Herb:
Bacopa

The anti anxiety herb, Bacopa, has proven to be helpful for many who are living with an anxiety disorder. It is also known as Brahmi or Water Hyssop and its leaves, when crushed, smells just like lemons.

Its use comes originally from India where they have been using it since the 6th century.  It's official name is Bacopa monnieri.  I has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries alone and in combination with other herbs.  Many have used it as a sedative,  a memory and learning enhancer, and even an anti-epileptic.  It grows in humid tropical environments, and is a popular aquarium plant.  In an Australian survey it was shown to be a very popular aid for memory among 60–64-year-old people there.

It is mainly used for panic and anxiety, memory, attention and other cognitive functions, mental and physical fatigue and boosts the immune system.

It works on the Nervous System and enhances nerve impulse transmission, which is why it helps with concentration, learning, memory, etc. But it also works on several other systems in the body to help with emotional well-being.

The lab results show that it may help in production of Serotonin as well which is probably why it is used as a natural cure for anxiety.

Bacopa, like American Ginseng, is an adaptogen which increases the body's own resistance to many stressors whether they are physical, biological or chemical.

Using Bacopa as an Anti Anxiety Herb:

For adults, the average recommended dose is 300mg daily.

For children, the recommended dose is between 10mg to 50mg daily

Also it has a pretty bad taste so if you can get it in capsule form, that's your best bet.  If you HAVE to take the tablet form, try to get it down quick and not let it touch your tongue for very long!

Does Bacopa have any side effects?

In studies, Bacopa has been proven to be very safe for seniors, adults and children and no interactions or major adverse side effects were reported.  If you take it on an empty stomach, you probably will have an upset stomach, so keep that in mind.

Another thing to keep in mind is that it takes time to work.  Don't expect immediate results.

I hope this has helped in your understanding of Bacopa. There are many other natural cures for anxiety out there, please click here if you would like to read about other anti anxiety herbs.
