Natural Anxiety Cures: Valerian Root

Among the various natural anxiety cures out there is the very popular Valerian Root.

Valerian Root is also known as tobacco root, All-heal and Garden Heliotrope.

It has a strong odor and the word valerian in Latin means "to be strong or healthy". It has been in use for centuries for a variety of ailments.

Valerian has been used to treat many health problems: liver problems, urinary tract disorders, nausea, vomiting, digestive problems, nervous conditions, epilepsy, sleeplessness, nervousness, hysteria and even as a diuretic. It was even used as a perfume in the 16th century!

Nowadays, it is more used for its sedative properties and for insomnia more than anything. However, it is not uncommon to see it used for menstrual cramps, irritable bowel syndrome, the restlessness that accompanies ADHD and migraine symptoms. And very rarely you may see it used for convulsions.

How To Take Valerian

Valerian has a strong odor like aged cheese. It is typically prepared in tea form, but should not be prepared with boiling water. This causes the lighter oils to burn off. But most people prefer to take it in the much easier tablet or capsule form.

Does Valerian have any side effects?

For most people, it's generally a pretty safe natural cure for anxiety. However, some have experienced the exact opposite reaction than expected. Instead of calming them down, it makes them feel suddenly nervous and anxious and may even have heart palpitations.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take Valerian. And because it is quite calming, you shouldn't drive or operate machinery while taking it. You also shouldn't take it if you are taking the anxiety herb skullcap.

You also would not want to take it if you are already taking anesthesia, anxiety medication or sedatives unless you talk to your doctor first.

I hope this has helped you understand Valerian a little better. Informing yourself of the different options out there is the best thing you can do for yourself. You can also read more about some of the other natural anxiety cures that are out there.
